White Christmas

Recently several residents from Devonshire attended the Pines Dinner Theatre for their version of White Christmas. Dinner was delicious, desserts even better and the service was excellent. Everyone made sure that attendees had a good experience. The show was not only entertaining, but fun and even had the audience joining in on some of the songs. The evening ended with falling snow on stage and in the audience. It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon and get into the holiday spirit.

Veterans Day

Devonshire Park Apartments celebrated the Veterans who live in Devonshire with a delicious brunch which was cooked and served by other residents including manager, Gina Fafard. The brunch consisted of Pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, fruit and several types of danish, bagels and coffeecakes. The event started with a flag dedication and pledge and concluded with everyone joining in and singing all of the branches of the service anthems. What a wonderful way to say Thank You to our Veterans. Thank you for your service.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Devonshire residents had a great time Saturday celebrating Halloween. Several residents were in costume and there were many residents in orange. Everyone enjoyed the pizza and the sides, snacks and especially the desserts. Prizes were given for the best costumes. The evening was complete with several games of Halloween Bingo and prizes to all the winners. What a great way to spend the Saturday before Halloween. Happy Halloween to everyone.

Pizza and Pajamas

What is more fun then being able to walk and wear your P.J's to a pizza party. That is what some of the residents did last week. Throw in some fun pictures from years ago and you have an evening of fun and laughter. Residents were asked to bring a picture of themselves from years ago and each one had to guess who was who. There were 12 people who bought pictures and the winner guessed 9 of them correctly. This author did not do that well but it sure was a good time. In addition to pizza, there was salad, veggies and of course plenty of desserts. We never forget the desserts!! What a great way to spend a Saturday evening.

What a wonderful day for a picnic! Residents enjoyed a great time on Saturday in Devonshire's beautiful pavilion. The weather was beautiful, the food plentiful and delicious and the company and conversation was so much fun. What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Thank you to everyone for bringing such a wide variety of dishes and desserts!! Thank you to Deana who came on her day off to cook the hot dogs and make sure everything was set up.

Ice Cream and Jeopardy

Residents enjoyed an evening of ice cream, Jeopardy and social time. They started the evening with 7 different choices of ice cream flavors, toppings of every kind, fruit for banana splits, root beer for floats and to top it off cake, cookies and pretzels. After having their fill of ice cream, they went on to enjoy a rousing game of Jeopardy led by our tenants, Joe and Elizabeth Dudeck. Joe is a retired teacher who puts together a great challenge. Between his sense of humor and the game, a wonderful time was had by all. A great evening was had by everyone and we are looking forward to the next challenge.

Line Dancing fun at Devonshire

For the last few weeks tenants have been enjoying Line Dancing instruction and Line Dancing. This has been not only fun but a great exercise. That and our chair yoga on Monday and Thursdays, our tenants have plenty of opportunity to exercise and have fun together. In addition Devonshire tenants have been enjoying the nice weather and walking our beautiful property with the dogwoods and flowers in spring bloom.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Tenants celebrated ST. Patrick's Day with lot of Irish music, corned beef and cabbage, Irish soda bread, and lots of other yummies. And if it wasn't Irish, it was green. In addition several rousing games of bingo were enjoyed. Irish symbols on the cards instead of numbers and lots of Irish themed prizes. There was a lot of green in the building. Great fun for everyone. Everyone is looking forward to our next event which will be our annual Easter dinner. Ham will be supplied by Devonshire and the other dishes are provided by all of our wonderful cooks in Devonshire.

Holiday Celebration

Christmas came early at Devonshire Park. Residents enjoyed the beautiful Christmas Decorations along with the wonderful food cooked by our residents. In addition there was great conversation and the evening ended with everyone joining in to sing many of the Christmas songs and carols. The singing was led off with solos from our tenants Brad and Linda Clark. Following their solos everyone joined in the singing led by Carol Clark and Carol Mueller. What a wonderful way to start the holiday season.

Crafting Fun

Once a month Devonshire offers the residents a crafting morning. The crafts fit the season and there is a selection to choose from. Most of the ladies do one of each and then take them home to use or share with family. This month we made turkey magnets, and a stand up turkey to display. Next month we will be making snowflakes, Christmas stars and trees. Everyone enjoys making the crafts but also the sharing of conversation and good fun. A few even completed the morning by going out to lunch. What a great time was had by everyone!

Halloween came to Devonshire

The residents of Devonshire shared a fun evening celebrating Halloween. Lots of wonderful snacks and desserts were provided by the residents. Lots of fun and crazy costumes. Great decorations provided by Deana. The activity room looked very festive in all its Halloween glory. Everyone had a great time. There was entertainment from two of our residents. Prizes for the best costumes and a great evening for everyone.

Fun begins at Devonshire during Oktoberfest

The residents of Devonshire enjoyed a wonderful night celebrating Oktoberfest. The variety of food was amazing with everything from German potato cakes, hot dogs, sauerkraut, Kielbasa, Pretzels and so many other delicious foods including the usual great assortment of desserts. Then they enjoyed a fun word game which everyone participated in and challenged each other in teams. Cheers to everyone who made this a wonderful fun time. Our next event will be the annual Halloween Party. Let's see who will have the best costume.

Summer Activities

Santa Claus came to Devonshire Park in July complete with candy canes. He told the tenants that they are on the good list so Santa will be good to them come Christmas. In August we celebrated Italian night with lots of spaghetti, meatballs, salad, some awesome desserts and of course lots of good fun. This week the tenants are looking forward to "Family Feud". In September everyone will be off to Hawaii for the "Hawaiian Luau" which will the highlight activity of the year.

DEVONSHIRE PARK APARTMENTS ANNUAL YARD SALE

Devonshire Park residents are looking forward to their annual Yard Sale. This is the time for them to clean out the items they have not used for the last year and for the new residents to move the items out of their apartment that they will not be using in their new apartment. New apartment means new things and rid the old. Don't miss out on the opportunity to get some great bargains.

Sale will be on Saturday, June 17th from 8:00AM until the last item is gone. The sale will be held along 32nd St. just off Devonshire Road in South Allentown. This location is across from the Salisbury Middle School and behind the South Mall.

SPRING ACTIVITIES

It has been a busy Spring with many activities and many additions to the community. In March we celebrated St. Patrick's Day and ended the month with an ice cream social. April we started the month with a delicious Easter dinner and ended the month with a fun "Take me out to the Ball Game" complete with hot dogs, cheese fries and cracker jacks, as well as a few challenging games to see who the most about baseball. May of course was "Cinco de Mayo complete with some wonderful food, games, and decorations and we ended the month with the game show "The Price is Right". Tenants went home with prizes but no cars. In between all these fun events we have gone out twice a month to lunch, tenants have been meeting for chair Yoga, meeting for coffee and donuts and of course, don't forget the weekly bingo. In all tenants are kept very busy.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Residents enjoyed a great party to celebrate ST. Patrick's Day. There was lots of yummy food including corned beef and cabbage, Shepherds pie, Cabbage and Noodles and many other yummies. And then it was time for dessert and so many choices. Everyone stayed in the green theme and there was green jello, Key Lime pie, cookies decorated in green and so many choices. After everyone finished eating, the residents played St. Patrick's Bingo.

Devonshire Park Apartments in "2022"

2022 started with a New Year's Eve Party. The year saw many activities, These include Western Night, Halloween Party, Picnics in our new pavilion and Holiday celebrations. All these activities included lots of good food provided by Devonshire and our Tenants. Our weeks are busy with Bingo, Yoga, Movies, Happy Hour, Travel videos night, Card and Game day, Bible Study and Knitting Group are just some of the many activities. In addition we tried many restaurants for lunch twice a month. In addition we had speakers who kept us informed on local concerns and health topics. We also had Emmaus Pharmacy come to administer flu shots and Coved boosters.

This was the year that Sharon Kelly who has been the manager for 30 years retired and Devonshire has gained a new manager, Gina Fafard, who has been the rental agent and has worked with our maintenance crew for several years. It was also the 10th year celebration of our 1641 building. Several of the residents who have been here since it opened were with us to help us celebrate.

We are looking forward to another busy year. We have started the year with A New Year's Eve party, a Pizza and Game Night and are looking forward to "Italian Nite" this week complete with Meatballs, Lasagna and Spaghetti. In February we will be having a "Valentine Party complete with a competitive Jeopardy game and then we will be entertained by "Joey Vincent" a well know entertainer.

Happy Easter from the Residents and Staff. It has been a busy spring so far. Things have returned to pre Covid days with all activities in full gear. Monday you can find the tenants at Bible Study in the morning and Chair Yoga in the evening. Tuesday they enjoy needlework in the afternoon and Movies in the evening. Wednesday, our gentlemen meet in the afternoon, in the evening everyone comes out for rousing games of Bingo and one Wednesday a month they head out for breakfast. Thursday, you can find the ladies enjoying a social time and one Thursday a month we have been heading out to lunch. Friday starts out with coffee and do-nuts, then Bingo and every other week we have Happy Hour. Last month we had two activities, St. Patrick's Day party and a potluck dinner. Last week we enjoyed an early Easter dinner complete with ham, sweet potatoes and lots of great sides and desserts cooked by our residents. Everyone is looking forward to our dessert evening next week.

Activities at Devonshire

The last 2 months have been busy with many activities. In November we celebrated our Veterans with coffee and do-nuts and they shared their stories. This was followed by a delicious Thanksgiving Dinner. Devonshire Park Apartments supplied the Ham and Turkey and residents supplied the remainder of the dinner and what a delicious dinner it was.

Then off to lunch at "B.J.'s" in November and "Bull and Bear" in December + plus a delicious breakfast at Perkins.

Our creative tenants spent a Sunday afternoon learning how to do String Art and turned out some beautiful pictures.

December saw the tenants enjoying movies, coffee and do-nuts, happy hour and are looking forward to the "Holiday Brunch"

We also welcomed entertainer, Joey Vincent back and what a great afternoon. Everyone enjoyed his entertainment and spent time after the performance enjoying cookies and coffee.

Happy Fall

It has been a busy fall so far. We had a wonderful picnic in our new pavilion. It was a perfect day and more than 30 people attended. 2 of our tenants were the grill masters and provided the homburgs and hot dogs. Residents supplied the rest of the meal and it was a culinary delite. Then we had a wonderful program given by Mr. Frank Whelan on the history of the Allen Family. Of course there is always weekly movies, bingo, cards, games and yoga. Trips to the Pines Dinner Theatre, Armettas for lunch and the HamFam Diner rounded out the month. We are looking to end the month with a Halloween Party on Saturday, Oct. 30th.

We are looking forward to November and another busy month. Keep in touch with us.

Devonshire Park Apartments are close to shopping, major highways, and medical facilities, yet we are surrounded by acres of beautiful landscaping. The above picture was taken by one of our tenants while taking a walk on the property. We enjoy lots of beautiful wildlife and convenience. Who could ask for anything more.

August has been a busy month!

Sunday starts the week with Mexican Train and other games. There is Chair Yoga on Monday, Movies and the Needlework group on Tuesday. Wednesday has the Men's social in the afternoon and Bingo in the evening. Thursday there is the Ladies social . Friday is busy from morning to evening starting with coffee and do-nuts, then Bingo and ending the day with Happy Hour .

In addition everyone enjoyed the Pizza Party , the Pines Dinner Theatre Show and are looking forward to lunch at the Trivet Restaurant and the Potluck Dinner in a few weeks.

With this very hot weather that we have been having, everyone has been enjoying our Olympic sized pool.

Don't forget to stop by our Yard Sale on Saturday, August 28th. Our tenants take this opportunity to clean out what they haven't used for the last couple of years and get ready for the fall. This is the 2nd yard sale this year. Location will be along 32nd Street SW in Allentown from 8:00 until.

It has been an exciting month with our activities starting up again and seeing our residents. Everyone has been enjoying meeting their new neighbors and are looking forward to a busy fall.

Activities have begun!!

How would you like to sit on your balcony and view scenes like this. This picture was taken recently by a tenant from her balcony. Tenants can enjoy scenes like this as well as deer, squirrels, many types of birds and wildlife and yet be only a mile from the closest shopping, medical facilities, and main highways. What a great place!!

This month began the start of our activities, Bingo, Coffee and Do-nuts, and Happy Hour. It was wonderful to see old friends getting together again and to welcome new tenants. People are enjoining the Indoor and the Olympic sized outdoor pool which has again opened after a year of COVID. It is especially great just in time for this hot weather.

In addition our card players and Mexican Train players are again challenging each other. Have you ever played Mexican Train? What a fun game. It is a game of skill, luck and lots of fun. Our knitters are back meeting again, chatting and knitting scarves and hats for the homeless. During the COVID they continued to knot at home, but it is so much more enjoyable getting together, chatting and knitting. In total they have donated several hundred scarves to the homeless shelter in Allentown, Pa. Way to go Ladies!!

Our first social event will be in a few weeks. We will be starting with the popular Ice Cream Social with everyone making their own ice cream sodas, sundaes or both. What a yummy way to spend an evening! We may end the evening with a game of "Name that Tune".

A group of residents recently attended the Pines Dinner Theatre in Allentown to see "Under the Boardwalk" and are looking forward to going to see "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" in August. They also enjoyed lunch at "Madelines" and are looking forward to having lunch at the "Plaza Axteca Grill" this month.

Looking ahead to August will see another Yard Sale on Saturday, August 14th from 8:00 until???? This event was so popular in June that we are going to repeat it.

May will bring some new activities.

Joey Vincent, who has entertained for years throughout the United States, Canada, England and Russia, will be doing a concert for the first time in a year and half due to Covid. He is an all round entertainer offering music, comedy and all around good fun. This will be an outdoor concert with everyone bringing lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the nice weather and our spacious lawn.

Residents are planning a trip to the Allentown "Pines Dinner Theatre" to see "Under the Boardwalk." Good food and lots of music. In addition each month there is a lunch outing and the trip to lunch this month is to "Madelines." Last month several residents enjoyed lunch at B.J.'s ale house.

Weekly there is Yoga night and Movie night.

Memorial Day for many Americans conjures up images of hamburgers, hot dogs, swimming pools and summertime. But the last Monday in May serves, most importantly, as a time to honor those who died while fighting in the U.S. armed Forces. It's a holiday steeped in somber American history and tradition. The day actually began as "Decoration Day", following the Civil War, when mourners placed flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. Yes, Memorial Day has also come to signify the "unofficial" start of summer , but let's remember the heroes who made it all possible.

April at Devonshire

A few activities have resumed recently. Devonshire residents are now able to get back to their Monday night chair yoga and the Tuesday night movies. Lunch out once a month has resumed and several residents enjoyed a delicious lunch at B.J.'s Ale House along with some wonderful conversation.

Bob Longenberger, a longtime resident celebrated his 96th birthday with a visit from a group of Marines who helped him celebrate. Bob served in both World War 2 and the Korean War. Devonshire is honored to have many veterans living here and we thank them so much for their service.

The garden has opened and several residents are getting ready to begin their spring planting. Flowers and vegetables are planted each year. One of our residents in the past year has brought us some of the largest sunflowers I have ever seen.

The employees recently celebrated "National Pretzel Day" with a variety of pretzels and another staff member spoiled them with a delicious Banana Pudding Cream Cake. All was thoroughly enjoyed.

Several residents are getting together outside now that the weather has gotten warmer. A group of ladies get together on Thursday afternoon and a group of gentlemen get together on Wednesday afternoon. Everyone is thrilled to be able to get together with their friends and neighbors.

To end this blog, lets have a little humor.

Sheltering in Place at Devonshire

Residents of Devonshire have spent the last several months sheltering in place. One of the best things about calling Devonshire Park Apartments home is that we are surrounded by beauty and we can walk in this beautiful park like setting, enjoy the many flowering trees, and beautiful rainbows or just enjoy the peace and quiet. The above picture is only a small part of our property. Devonshire is located on 31 acres of beautiful landscape. Once in awhile we will even come across a deer and her babies and all within a mile of Lehigh Street, Route #309, #78, and Cedar Crest Boulevard.

If we want to visit with a neighbor, it is easy and still keep our 6 foot distance.

One of our residents kept herself busy making masks to be shared. She made close to 300 masks which she shared with other residents. She would simply place them in the entrance on a table where a tenant could take one. Our thanks to Jane for her hard work and to the residents who donated material and ribbon to help her.

Other residents kept knitting and crocheting scarves to be donated to the homeless shelters and small baby hats to be donated to the hospital for premie babies when they again will be able. The picture below shows those residents when they were able to meet and socialize while knitting. It also shows the number of scarves that were ready to be given away. Over the past years this group has donated over 350 scarves. At this time they have been staying at home and keeping busy ready for when they can again donate items.

Some of our couples have kept themselves busy tackling picture puzzles, crossword puzzles and catching up on their reading. Some have watched more television in the last 3 months then they have in the last 3 years.

As we move into the yellow phase, our residents our looking forward to again being able to play bingo, have Friday coffee and do-nuts with their neighbors, do their Monday night Yoga, Tuesday Movies and their water aerobics as well as their twice a month Saturday activities. Hopefully Green will not be too far in the future.

The residents recently collected food and delivered it to The Allentown Rescue Mission.

Devonshire also has a needlework group of ladies who continue to be busy making scarves and hats that are donated to the Homeless Shelter. They have just completed about 100 more scarves and to date have donated several hundred scarves to the shelter. They not only work hard but have a fun social afternoon. Wishing You A Joyous New Year!

Our residents had a wonderful time celebrating at the annual Holiday Party!

Community Activites:

Coffee &Doughnuts – Fri, Jan. 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st – Coffee served from 9:00 AM—Donuts served from 9:30am.

Happy Hour — Fri, Jan. 3rd, 17th and 31st 5:00 PM – Wine & beer provided. You are welcome to bring a snack or B.Y.O.

Aqua Fitness — Every Tuesday & Thursday from 10:00 AM—11:00 AM– Join your neighbors in pool exercises.

Chair Yoga — Every Monday at 6:00 PM— Come out and stretch. Good for everyone.

Movies — Every Tuesday at 1:00 PM & 7:00 PM—Check schedule for the upcoming features.

Soup and Chowder —Sat. Jan. 18th—5:00 PM — It is that time of year when a nice bowl of soup or chowder will chase away the winter chill. Bring your favorite soup, chowder, dessert or salad ingredient. Devonshire will supply the beverages, and bread. (Reservations to Terri (610)751-9930 no later than Wed. Jan. 15th. (This is the absolute latest she can take a reservation.)

Jan. 28th— ”The Art of Racing in the Rain” - (PG) 2019 (Drama, Romance) Denny Swift is a Formula One race car driver who understands that the techniques needed on the racetrack can also be used to successfully navigate everyday life. Christmas Craft Making - Thurs. Dec. 12th—1:00 PM — Join MaryKay for an afternoon of making Christmas crafts. Crafts will be used to decorate the tables for the annual Christmas Party.

Christmas Party - Saturday, Dec. 14th—5:00 PM — Food will be provided by Devonshire. This year we are asking everyone to pay $5.00 towards the food. Reservations are needed to Terri no later than Mon. Dec. 9th to assure that we have enough food. Menu will consist of roast beef, turkey and ham for sandwiches, vegetable platter, salads, meat balls and dessert.

Christmas Sing-a-Long - Mon. Dec. 16th—1:00 PM — Join Emily for a festive sing a long. Spend some time getting into the season singing your favorite Christmas songs and carols. Tea, coffee, eggnog and cookies will be provided.

New Year’s Eve Celebration - Dec. 31st—7:00 PM Welcome “2020” with your friends and neighbors of Devonshire at our annual “New Year’s Eve Celebration”. Devonshire will provide meatball sandwiches, beer, wine, sodas and coffee. We ask you to bring a snack or hors d'oeuvre to share. BYOB, if desired. Let’s see who makes it to watch the ball!!!

Holiday Safety Tips:

Half of home fire deaths occur between the hours of 11:00PM and 7:00 AM and are caused by faulty holiday wiring, overloading of outlets and leaving cooking equipment unattended. Candles start almost half of home decoration fires.

*** Inspect electrical decorations for damage before use.

*** Do not overload electrical outlets

*** Never connect more than three strings of Incandescent lights

*** Keep tree fresh by watering daily

*** Use battery operated candles

*** Keep combustibles at least three feet from heat sources

*** Protect cord from damage

*** Check decorations for certification label

*** Stay in the kitchen when something is cooking.

*** Turn off, unplug and extinguish all decorations when going to sleep or leaving the house.
